Valtrex is an antiviral used in the treatment of conditions caused by the herpes virus. It works by preventing the virus from reproducing. In patients with a normal immune system, it relieves the pain of shingles (herpes zoster), cold sores (herpes labialis or fever blisters), and treats or suppresses genital herpes. In patients with HIV infection, it also suppresses genital herpes. It is important to note that Valtrex is not a cure. It does not kill the virus. When used in patients with normal immune systems to treat genital herpes, it does not reduce the risk of spreading the infection to others. Safe sex practices should always be followed. |
