Nexium® is used to stop stomach ulcers forming if you are at risk of developing them whilst taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as those used in the treatment of arthritis.
Nexium® is used to treat heartburn with or without inflammation of the gullet (esophagus or oesophagus) caused by acid from the stomach escaping into the gullet. Nexium® reduces acid production and helps the healing of the gullet by reducing the pain and inflammation.
Before taking Nexium®, you should make sure that you have told your doctor about any other medicines that you are taking, including those you have bought without a prescription.
Nexium tablets and injection contain the active ingredient esomeprazole, which is a type of medicine called a proton pump inhibitor. It acts in the stomach to decrease the production of stomach acid.
Proton pumps are found on cells that line the stomach and are used by these cells [...]
Nexium (Esomeprazole) is in a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) which block the production of acid by the stomach. Other drugs in the same class include omeprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole (Prevacid), rabeprazole (Aciphex) and pantoprazole (Protonix).
Nexium has come as a wonderful relief in treating heartburn in acid reflux disorders. Acids are released in the stomach for digestion of food. When some of this acid persistently flows back into the food tube, the esophagus, its lining get damaged leading to a condition known as erosive esophagitis.
